QSOCC Committee Planning Meeting

QSOCC Planning Committee Meetings are going on now! Meetings happen every other Friday evening 5-6:30 pm in the DSOL Conference Room (4th floor Smith). If you are interested in helping to shape the next inter/national conference by and for Queer Students of Color please let Jayvin and I know.

The Queer Students of Color conference is a Queer Student of Color initiated and led conference providing resources and tools for campus and community change to Queer Student of Color and their allies. It provides resources, leadership training, and skill building.

If you have not been through volunteer training but are still interested in participating, please let me know. All QRC volunteers need to go through our 1-3 hour training before participating in a Committee.

Trans Day of Remembrance Planning

Trans Day of Remembrance planning is starting soon. Committee meetings will start in late September but folks who are interested in being involved should get in touch with Kirsten and I as soon as possible.

TDOR was set aside to memorialize those who were killed due to anti-trans hatred or prejudice. PSU celebrates the lives of those we have lost and asks us to think more deeply, critically, and intersectionally about violence against members of the trans community and those caught up in anti-trans hatred related crimes.

Coming Out Week Committee

The Committee to plan Coming Out Week events is meeting now. Volunteers who want to help shape the events planned for C.O.W. should contact both Monica and I to let us know. The next planning meeting is scheduled for Thursday August 25th at 2:30 pm.

Summer Volunteer Needs

Hi all!

We need help from volunteers with Summer hours free to work on any or all of the following:

Immediate Needs

* Love Your Body Day - help call for donations and coordinate event with the WRC
* Latino Pride - we have a table for Latino Pride on the Eastbank Esplanade on July 17th and need help with set up, tabling, and take down between 9 am and 9pm.

Less Immediate but still REALLY Important

* Desk Core - staff the front desk between 12-5 M-F any day or hours in that block

VOLUNTEER TRAINING

Attention folks who are new to the QRC,

We ask that all new volunteers and interns attend a mandatory training
session before volunteering at the QRC, so we're hosting two in
September!

Thursday, Sept. 23 from 2-4pm @ the QRC
Wednesday, Sept. 29 from 3-5pm @ the QRC

The training is designed to help you get acquainted with the QRC,
learn how to cultivate safer space and be an ally, contribute your
ideas for the coming year, and sign-up for existing volunteer
opportunities!

Please RSVP me as soon as you know your schedule (qrcvol@pdx.edu or
503-725-9742). If neither of these dates work for you, let me know
and I'll schedule another training.

CURRENT VOLUNTEER PROJECTS AND OPPORTUNITIES

In the QRC
FRONT DESK
• Schedule open from 9am-7pm for fall term, typical shift length is 2 hours.
• Contact Mel (Volunteer Coordinator) for scheduling and shift availability.

RESOURCE WALL
• Check that the brochures and pamphlets are up to date on the resource wall in the entrance of the center and the front desk resource binder. If unsure, contact pamphlet organization or group. Check the front door and events calendar on the corkboard in the lounge for out-of-date materials.
• Organize/tidy existing info.
• If possible, pick-up new pamphlets and brochures from community and campus orgs.

Volunteer Positions
PINK GALLERY CURATOR
• Program art shows for the Pink Gallery located at the QRC.
• Promote queer and ally artists.
• Re-envision space.
• Schedule calendar of gallery shows and openings.
• Talk to Beth (Administration and Publicity Coordinator) for details.

Events
QUEER SQUARE DANCE
(September 24, Park Blocks)
• Represent and promote the QRC by handing out fliers and talking to new and returning students.
• Tear down and/or event set-up.

TABLING
• Welcome Week (September 20-24).

SPECTRUM
About
• The QRC, as well as members of SAGE, will be hosting a prospective student orientation called Spectrum in January 2011.
Preparation
• Participant recruitment at local high schools. Tasks include: contacting local schools and GSAs and QSAs to talk about the project, schedule and conduct presentations and distribute fliers promoting the event.
Day of
• 1 on 1 mentoring and orienting of new and prospective students.
• Speakers and presenters (ideally folks from the QSA, QPOC and other related groups).

BRIGAYDE
About
• A practicum and volunteer program to bridge the queer and ally campus population with other student groups and organizations on campus that historically have little queer visibility.
Current Tasks
• Research events during the academic year (SALP, Student Unions etc.) for the briGAYde to attend.
• Start a briGAYde calendar and input potential events.

Writing/Research Projects
NEWSLETTER
• Research community and campus events to promote in the QRC weekly newsletter and in the center.
• Forward info. to Beth @ betholsondesign@yahoo.com

GRANT RESEARCH
• Start a spreadsheet with information, including due dates, for grants applicable to the QRC in areas such as technology/equipment, programming, events, and outreach.

GLITTERBOMB ADVERTISING
• Create an advertising campaign for the QRC. For example: file QRC bookmarks in books throughout the library, make a poster or handbill promoting queer visibility on campus, come up with your own idea!

SPEAKERS BUREAU UPDATE
• Review and edit both Bridges Manual and Bridge’s Facilitator Manual for the new practicum program: The Speakers Bureau. (Talk to Mel for location of files).

HEALTHCARE ON CAMPUS
• Create Gender Resources Guide with PSU resources. (Talk to Cat (Center Coordinator) for location of OSU forms as a model and Smitty (Trans Student Resources) for further instruction).

Support Portland AIDS Walk 2010!

Dear volunteers,

Don't forget to join the QRC at Portland AIDS Walk! If you click on this link, then hit "Join A Team," we are listed under Portland State University Queer Resource Center. The event takes place on October 3, 2010 and is a 2.5 mile walk and rally. The area opens at 9:00a.m. and the walk starts at 11a.m.

Anyone can join the team and anyone can throw money toward the event. We're trying to raise $100.00, and there is no penalty for not meeting the goal.

Thank you so much to all of the volunteers who've already joined the QRC team!!!

In addition to walking on our school team, volunteers are needed to set-up, tear-down, take pictures, greet participants, prepare food, design a scavenger hunt and more! Our fabulous publicity coordinator Beth has recently updated the QRC website and would like to include bios of all of you!

All interested volunteers should send Beth (betholsondesign@yahoo.com) a brief bio of yourself and a photo. The bio can be as professional or personal as you would like including: what you do at the QRC and/or why you got involved with the center, your major, where you're from, your interests and/or whatever you would like to tell visitors to our website about yourself. QRC PRACTICA OPPORTUNITIES!

Want to get involved with a leadership project through the QRC and earn credit? Check out our new practica opportunities for students beginning this fall:

1. Practicum: Queer Resource Center, Speaker's Bureau (1-2 credits available)

The Queer Resource Center is offering a 1-2 credit practicum experience (30 hours - 60hours, averaging 3-6 hours a week) during Fall 2010 and Winter 2011 terms. Practicum students will work with the Queer Resource Center Speaker's Bureau. The Bureau is committed to contributing to a Portland State University campus environment that is free from homophobia, heterosexism and gender bias. Speakers accomplish this by sharing their stories and experiences around gender identity, sexual orientation, and all marginalized and intersecting identities in classrooms, student groups, faculty gatherings and in the Portland community. Practicum students will:

*Read and understand the theoretical and philosophical underpinnings of the Speaker's Bureau model
*Revise and update the existing Queer Resource Center Speaker's Bureau Manual
*Assist the Queer Resource Center Coordinator to train new panelists
*Develop a panelist recruitment plan with the QRC Coordinator and Volunteer Coordinator
*Recruit panelists
*optional: Become a trained facilitator to serve as a moderator during panels

2. Practicum: Queer Resource Center, BriGAYde (1-2 credits available)

The Queer Resource Center is offering a 1-2 credit practicum experience (30 hours - 60hours, averaging 3-6 hours a week) during Fall 2010 and Winter 2011 terms. Practicum students will work with the Queer Resource Center BriGAYde. The BriGAYde's purpose is to serve as a visible representative from the Queer Resource Center at events throughout campus. Gender identity and sexual orientation are are not always readily discernible and the BriGAYde members serve to build community among populations on campus that might not otherwise find each other.

*Read and understand the theoretical and philosophical underpinnings of the BriGAYde model
*Become a trained BriGAYde member
*Develop a plan of events to attend throughout the Fall and/or Winter terms
*Attend events
*Contribute these experiences to the Queer Resource Center volunteer blog

3. Practicum: Queer Resource Center, Queer Ally Training (1-2 credits available)

The Queer Resource Center is offering a 1-2 credit practicum experience (30 hours - 60hours, averaging 3-6 hours a week) during Fall 2010 and Winter 2011 terms. Practicum students will work with the Queer Resource Center Queer Ally Training. The purpose of these trainings are to provide facilitations, experiential learning opportunities, and exercises that promote a campus environment free of heterosexism, homophobia and gender bias.

*Read and understand the Queer Resource Center facilitator's manual
*Attend at least one training intake
*Learn agenda design for the trainings
*Attend at least one training as an observer
*Create an outreach plan to advertise trainings to the PSU campus
*Optional: Deliver a training with the Queer Resource Center Coordinator

Hey all,

Two things about front desk shift volunteering:

1. SUMMER: Anyone who is around this summer interested in taking a front desk shift? Hours available are:

Mondays: 12-5pm
Tuesdays: 3-5pm
Wednesdays: 12-5pm
Thursdays: 12-5pm
Fridays: 12-3pm

2. FALL: If you already know your schedule and would like to volunteer this fall, sign-up now for a regular front desk shift before your ideal time-slot fills up. Schedule is open M-F, 9am-5pm.
